How about some new techs that can affect ground invasion. One of the options for ground assaults are mass drivers. Why not have an orbital bombing invasion tactic that is based on the current technology in bombing. You'd start with small bombs that do little damage to people or structures. You get more and more destructive until you got to the "nuclear" type bombings which modified PQ as well as were quite massive in damage to structure and population. Then you'd also have precision bombing with smart bombs that attacked specific structures(orbital fleet manager). This bomber would be part of a regular fleet, not the assault fleet. Sometimes you destroy all the fleets in orbit just to wait a number of turns to have your assault ship arrive only to find more ships in orbit again. Would be nice to take out that OFM the first time we visited. Maybe just bomb the production or research squares. Certain tiles would be offlimits. And the smart bombs could target mainly the military infrastructure, so it would reduce those part of the population that would take place in the ground offensive(ie lowering the number of soldiers).

Also....

Perhaps an invasion fleet couldn't attack until another new planetary defense tile was removed, the planetary shield. This could only be accomplished by having a bomber type in the fleet. Depending on your bombing type, scanners, etc, you may hit other buildings or the shield generator.

Read the Official Carriers/Planetary Bombardment sticky thread in the Game Talk forum.

'sigh'...

Just sent the troop transports with the warships as a fleet, then you destroy the orbiting ships and invade in the same 1-2 turns.

Ever heard of Planetary Bombardment (it is an existing tech)?

If you want more, learn how to mod them in for yourself.
It really is not that difficult.

Master of Orion had a bomb tech tree like you are describing. Nuclear Bombs were actually the lowest level of bomb tech, which makes sense considering you are talking about civilizations that have interstellar travel capability. There were also planetary shields and "death spores" of various sorts which were biological weapons that only killed population, not infrastructure.

That was kind of the idea.

Making a bomb tech tree with the associated invasion types would be semi-trivial I suppose. But adding new modules for mission specific ships or prequisites like that for invasion types is something the community can't do, right? So we'd have to wait for GC 3, I too would really like to see some more options in mission modules for ships (EW, point defense, cloaking etc).
